Oxidation removal faq’s
Gel coat is the protective outer layer of your boat’s fiberglass. It’s responsible for the boat’s color, shine, and defense against UV rays, saltwater, and environmental damage.
Gel coat isn’t a completely smooth, impermeable layer. If you look under a microscope, it’s actually full of tiny pores — little microscopic openings in the surface. These pores are how the gel coat “breathes” and how coatings like wax and ceramic attach.
When gel coat fails, the fiberglass underneath is exposed — and repairs get expensive fast.
What is gel coat and why does it matter?
Oxidation happens when gel coat is broken down by:
Sun exposure
Saltwater and costal air
Lack of protection and maintenance (wax or ceramic)
Age and neglect
Improper washing or harsh chemicals (bleach, dawn, products made by auto companies)
In South Texas especially, UV is the biggest culprit.
Instead of being smooth and glossy, the surface becomes dry, chalky, faded, and rough.
If you’ve ever wiped your boat and had white residue on your hand—that’s oxidation.
If your boat used to shine and now looks tired or hazy — that’s oxidation.
What does “oxidized gel coat” mean and what causes it?
The color looks faded or flat
The surface feels chalky or rough
White residue comes off on your hand
Wax no longer restores shine
Water doesn’t bead anymore
How can I tell if my boat needs oxidation removal?
How necessary is removing oxidation?
The longer it’s delayed, the worse it gets.
Left untreated, oxidation continues eating away at the gel coat, eventually leading to:
Permanent fading
Thinning gel coat
Expensive repainting or re-gelcoating
Early correction preserves your boats resell value, improves performance and extends the boats lifespan.
How does oxidation removal work?
When we sand and compound oxidized gel coat, we’re removing the damaged outer layer, which does two important things:
Opens up the pores — the surface is now clean and able to accept wax, sealants, or ceramic coatings.
Exposes healthy gel coat — the wax or ceramic can now bond to the solid, undamaged surface instead of floating on top of chalky residue.
Think of it like sanding a rough wall before painting: if you skip that step, the paint won’t stick, and it’ll peel off quickly. Oxidation removal is that sanding step for your boat’s gel coat..
is it gone forever once it is removed?
Removing the oxidation doesn’t prevent it from coming back.
Oxidation removal only takes off the damaged, chalky top layer—the healthy gel coat underneath is still intact. After restoration, it’s essential to protect the surface with wax or ceramic coating and perform regular maintenance washes. This keeps the gel coat sealed, prevents new oxidation, and preserves the shine for years.
